Iwao Akiyama was born in 1921 in Oita prefecture.
When he was very young, he learned Suiboku- ga(Sumi painting) under the monk who was famous Suiboku-ga artist in his area. After war, he learned woodblock prints under Mr. Shiko Munakata who is great Japanese artist. Now Akiyama is very famous artist of woodblock print and Suiboku-ga (Sumi painting) artist. His art is witty and humorous. His favorite subjects are owls, cats, Buddhist monks, women and folktales. Specially his prints and paintings with Haiku (called Santouka) are most popular. These Haiku were by Santouka Taneda(1882-1940). Santouka was a revered itinerant Zen Buddhist monk. Santouka is also very popular and famous in Japan. Santouka's Haiku is very humorous, sometimes heart-warming. Akiyama prints and painting with Santouka are most desirable. Akiyama's art is look like "Folk-art". He has very unique style instantly recognized. Akiyama held his first exhibition in the CWAJ Print Show and has participated every year since 1966. He is collected worldwide. His art works are in the collections of several museums all of the world.
