"Hatsurai" (First Thunder Storm)


We are very pleased to be able to offer this highly unusual hand made woodblock print by Gekko Ogata (1859-1920). "Hatsurai" (First Thunder Storm) this is recarved edition of original kuchi-e first published by Bungei Kurabu which was a very popular literary magazine in Meiji era.  This Bijin is scared by a fierce first thunder storm in season. Signed "Gekko" with artist seal.  Gekko Ogata is very famous Ukiyo-e artists of the Meiji era.

This elegant larger recarved edition by Soudosha Publishers from a limited edition series of only 980 sheets and published on October 1, 1977. The paper measures about 10 and 3/4 inches by 16 inches and is lightly embossed. Still tipped to original presentation folder. Good condition, bright colors with fill margins. One very faint foxing on the upper right of image and some extremely faint foxing on the left margin and verso. Please see pictures carefully. Wonderful Japanese woodblock print.  Very Japanese mood.
