"Otani Tokuji- Kabuki" by Sharaku
Toshusai, active 1794-1795. This image shows the kabuki actors "Otani Tokuji".
Sharaku is one of the greatest misteries of art hismysteriespopped out of
nowhere, created some 140 designs, mostly bust portraits of kabuki actors, and
then disappeared from the scene. Numerous theories have been developed and
countless books were written trying to give an answer to one of the biggest
enigmas in art history. Prints by Sharaku are among the rarest and most
expensive ukiyo-e. Signed: Toshusai Sharaku. Very good condition, never framed;
excellent colors, perfect mica background. Typical a few faint ink smudge on the
margins. Once tipped. Would have been first published in Edo period. This is a
re-carved edition of a later unknown date (Showa era). Width is 9 inches and
height is 13 and 1/8 inches. Included with woodblock print is a windowed folder
for viewing print. Excellent shading and ink bleed through. Genuine hand made
Japanese woodblock print. Wonderful details with very crisp lines.
