Masterpiece of Utamaro

Although the Ukiyoe painter, Kitagawa Utamaro, is internationally renowned as a genius, his origins are unclear. While it is known that he was born in 1753, there is no record of his parents or of his birthplace. His first work consisted of pictures of "Kabuki" actors and took illustrations in the fashion of Kitagawa -Toyoaki.Later, with the publisher "Tsutaya - Jujiro" as his patron, he took the name "Utamaro" and devoted himself to drawing pictures of beautiful woman. Utamaro's models for many of his masterpieces were beautiful woman from streets and licensed quarters of Edo. Stories abound of his love affairs with these ladies. It is said that few painters anywhere in the world have sought to paint the beauty of woman as deeply as he did.
