"Motoyoshiwara no asa" (Motoyoshiwara at Morning) by Kawase Hasui (1883 - 1957). Dated Showa 15 (1940). Original first edition with the appropriate Watanabe "E" seal in right margin. Signed Hasui with red artist seal "Sui" in lower right of image. Left margin is title in Japanese and in lower left margin is date "Showa 15 nen saku" (Printed 1940). From the series, "Takaido fukei senshu" (Select views of the Takaido Road). A rare view of Mt. Fuji by Hasui as seen from the Motoyoshiwara village in the early morning.
This is NOT a reprint or a later edition. Watanabe "E" seal is difficult to find and used only from 1932 to 1942. The "C" seal (1929-1942) is much more common. Hausi prints from 1937 till WWII are very scarce and difficult to obtain.
Very good condition for it's age. Tiny pinholes in each corner and some staining on the verso will easily mat out when framed. Toning is typical for it age. Please see pictures. Paper size is 10 and 5/8 inches wide by 15 and 1/4 inches tall.
