"Botan ni Cho"(Peony and Butterfly) by Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849). Katsushika Hokusai was a Japanese artist, Ukiyo-e painter and printmaker of the Edo period. Paper size is 15 and 5/8 inches by 10 and 3/4 inches. Originally in Edo period, thus re-covered edition was made on unknown date. Genuine Japanese handmade woodblock print. Good Condition. Full margins. Soft cream color paper. Some tiny fiber into paper from handmade paper process which is very common. Slight ink smudge at the upper right corner and bottom margin. Extremely minor paper creaseing on the bottom margin. Very faint discolor on the edge of paper and verso. Natural small wrinkle in paper as seen in upper left of image which do not effect image. One must be very close to see. Not noticeable to the casual observer. Signature "Zen Hokusai I'itsu hitsu" on the lower left of image. "Takamizawa" publisher seal, "Kikuta Kojiro" corver seal and "Hashizume Mitsuo" printer seal on the verso.  Very Japanese mood. It has original presentation folder and explanation paper. Very elegant print.

Hokusai did his "flowers and birds" either in large horizontal framed or in medium - sized vertical ones. In both cases, his "flowers and birds" bear strong influences of Chinese schools of painting marked with realistic touches - unlike Hiroshige's which are plain and lightcolored. They remind us of the patterns in dyed cloths woven by the Chinese during the Ming dynasty. The luxurious touch of this Hokusai work seems to show the extent of cultural ripeness attained by the Japanese under the Tokugawa shogunate.

This reproduction is based on a well - preserved original in the Gale collection of the United States.
