"SAKURA- Somei Yoshino" (Yoshino Cherry) by Kawarazaki Shodo (1889 -1973). New condition. Paper size is 10 and 3/4 inches by 15 and 3/4 inches. Published by Unsodo. Japanese title, Unsodo seal, Yoshida printer's seal, Nagashima carver's seal and Gei watermark in left margin. "Shodo" characters in upper left of image. Genuine Japanese woodblock print. Undated. Wonderful details with typical Unsodo printer's tiny "smudge" on the right margin. Please see the pictures very carefully. This later impression from original blocks. Truly beautiful.

In ancient Japan the Deity of the Mountains, the most powerful of all deities, came down to the rice patties on the petals of the cherry blossoms to offer his soul, embodied in the rice gains, to humans, who would grow the grains of rice to full maturity and give the Deity a return gift of multiplied seeds in the fall. Generally cherry blossoms symbolize a celebration of life. The beauty and delicate nature of a cherry blossom can't be denied.
