This woodblock print is a sheet from woodblock book of Kyosai "Kyosai-Rakuga".
Published by Unsodo. This is a later printing reprinted in the same way
of 130 years ago from a first edition. Made from the original wooden blocks
obtained from the original publisher. Excellent condition. Unsodo seal,
Ichimura printer's seal on the right margin. Paper size is 14 and 3/8 by
10 and 7/8 inches. Kyosai signature and his official red seal on the lower
right of image. Excellent shading and ink bleed through. Genuine Japanese
woodblock print. Wonderful details. A few extremely minor ink smudge
and extremely minor creasing on the margins which is very common
and will be easily mat out. Printed on thick soft paper. Please see the
pictures. Very Japanese mood. Kyosai Kawanabewas born 1831 in Ibaragi prefecture the
son of a samurai. He studied painting in the Kano school. His unique style of
painting that overflowed in the wit and humor was impressive. His interest in
foreign countries was high in those days but he was never interested in
imitating their style.. He was famous for his drinking and great story telling.
His style is from the bizarre to the traditional and his designs from the
comic/satiric to weird/frighting.
