"Hatsumoude" (First Visit to the Shrine) this extremely rare woodblock by Tatsumi Shimura (1907-1980). Limited Edition 113 of 450. This print has very seldom been seen outside of Japan. Tatsumi specialized in bijin ga - prints of beautiful women. "Hatsumoude" is the first shrine visit of the New Year in Japan. Some people visit a Buddhist temple instead. First, we wash hands and mouth by fresh water at entrance to clean myself and show respect for god or Buddha. This lady hold a little bit up her sleeve of Kimono to avoid the water. We feel "beauty of Japanese woman" through this small careful gesture of woman. I think Tatsumi really wanted to show beauty of Japanese women and Japanese customs both into this print. Japanese culture or custom is very respectful, and I believe Japanese culture and custom is very calm, quiet and peaceful. This print brings very virtuous and peaceful mood to any room. This print exemplifies all our hopes and dreams of starting a new year full of determination to be a better person.
